St. Francis of Assisi

Glory to St. Francis, the little poor man of Assisi, but an illustrious saint !
The Prayer of Saint Francis
"O Lord, make me an instrument of Thy Peace!Where there is hatred, let me sow love;Where there is injury, pardon;Where there is discord, harmony;Where there is doubt, faith; Where there is despair, hope; Where there is darkness, light, and Where there is sorrow, joy. Oh Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love; for it is in giving that we receive; It is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life."

"D " is for .....

http://famousdiamonds.tripod.com/

Did you know that the BEST - Flawless diamond is given a "D" col. ?
that is as high in grading as they can get when the Quality of a Diamond is given certificate of "D" ....
BUT ,
the diamonds from India -- & particulerly from the GOLCONDA mines which were owned by the NIZAM & 10 most precious & largest diamonds of this world , which are in the British & French & Russian Royalties crowns -- come from the "Golconda " mines.

The Hope, the Cullian, the Kohi -i - Noor etc etc & their grading & the LIGHT emanating from them is so sparkly & luminiscent that it defies even the bench mark of industry -- it means -- they are even beyond "D" color !!

When a piece of CARBON gets the pressure above millions of degrees it transforms from dark black coal into a diamond !

We humans also shine with hardships & pressure & reach our utmost potential -----

the good ones turn into Gems & the weak , break down into oblivion !
From Dust ...to Dust ....
From ashes to Ashes ....

Jagadish Chandra Bose

Bose was the first to fabricate the device that generated microwaves-radio waves of very short wavelength...

http://www.4to40.com/legends/index.asp?article=legends_jcbose

Born on November 30, 1858, at Mymensingh, now in Bangladesh, Bose was brought up in a home steeped in Indian tradition and culture. He used to read the Mahabharata and the Ramayana. Karna, who struggled throughout his life to achieve success, inspired him. He thus came to believe that "true success is born out of defeat".In 1885, he returned from abroad with a B.Sc. degree and Natural Science Tripos. He was offered a lectureship at as Presidency Collage in Calcutta on a salary half that of his "white" colleagues. He accepted the job, but refused to draw his salary as a protest. After three years, when the collage principal, a Briton, found him to be a brilliant teacher, he conceded his demand. He was paid full salary from the date he joined the collage.

Kis ne kiya,

Kya Ped ne, fal phool ka ?
Fal ne kiya kya beej ka ?
Beej ne fir kiya ped ka ?
Har baar Zindgi, jeet gayee !
Premi ne payee parchayeen,
Apne mastane youvvan ki,
Priya ki kajraree aankhon mein,
Shishu muskaan chamkatee si,
Aur,us baar bhi Zindgi jeet gayee !
Her pal parivartit paridrishyon mein,
oogte Ravi ke fir dhalne mein,
Chanda ke chanchal chalne mein,
Bhupali ke oothte spandan mein,
Raat- Yaman tarangon mein,
Her baar Zindgi jeet gayee !
Sadhak ki vishuddha sadhna mein,
Tapas ki atal tapasya mein,

" Aaj ke Bichude na jane Kab Milenge ? "

I*I

( this HINDI poem is the most famous Poem of my Father - here is its English translation )

When Shall They Meet?
~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~
Ah Hope! Who have parted today,
when shall they meet?
From today, the Love-Birds,
shall be called the seers of love,
Ah! Hope, who have parted today,
when shall they meet?
If a fraction of a second,
could be mine, in my dreams,
With you and if only it were true,
But alas! For this hopeless penance!
Ah! Hope! Who have parted today,
when shall they meet?
For I know that, we will never meet,
But spring will roll on and Monsoon occur,
Look at me at your hearts content,
For I shall never return !
Ah Hope! Who have parted today,
when shall they meet?
Cry no more,
your tears are futile..
Teach your heart to be able to laugh
But to laugh together, we won't ever meet!
Ah Hope! Who have parted today,
when shall they meet?
From today, shall we see,
same stars in the sky?
But apart, forever, like two riverbanks,
Which do not meet, even at the sea!
Ah Hope! Who have parted today,
when shall they meet?
Like the broken halves of a heart,
Lay, the two river sides,
prostrate & helpless,
Dividing them, flows the River of Time!
On this path of beginning and End!
They won't ever meet!
Ah Hope! Who have parted today,
when shall they meet?
If only I were sure, that I couldMeet you,
Beloved, in Heaven,I wouldn't be so helpless
But will we meet, even in dreams?
Ah Hope! Who have parted today,
when shall they meet?
There was no dreamer, whose dreams became truths,
The hazy hands of dreams never,Wipe out the hands of Destiny!
Now I know, it is impossible to meet!
Ah Hope! Who have parted,
when shall they meet?
Ah! That last night of our union,
You sat close to me, your head on my shoulder,
your hair, wild and asked in a thin voice of me,
"When shall we meet? "
When I, soaked in sorrow, ask,
The world around, "When shall I meet " "
" When shall I meet ? " echoes,
The space and the sea in a scream!
The answer to the question, the same!
Ah Hope! Who have parted today,
when shall they meet?
My life's SPRING is spent
yet my tired limbs ,
still feel its coming !
It is that eternal .
which flows , in all !
In me & you ,
in this universe
silent yet so profound !
" like the silent night,
like the twinkling stars,
like the pure raindrops,
like a burning candle light
like the Sun & the Moon ~~
Like NATURE all around me,
You come to my mind. "
Bade Ghulam Ali Khan saab
& this too ~~~
listen to Bade Ghulam Ali Khan saab here : ~~~
[ Bade Ghulam Ali Khan saab : sings Mian ki Malhaar Raag ]
...One day [Bade Ghulam Ali] Khansaheb had a radio broadcast at 1 p.m. As I was working for the Bombay Radio Station at the time, I too had to be in attendance. After he had finished, Khansaheb said, "Wait for a while. I have sent for a taxi - we shall go together." It was mid-july and the rain was coming down in torrents. Besides, I was hungry. But I did not have the heart to say 'no' to Khansaheb. The taxi came along and we got in. Water in any form made Khansaheb happy and heavy rains in particular were pure bliss for him. Some of the rain-water seeped into the taxi and began to drench us but Khansaheb seemed to be in high spirits. He said, "Come Deodharsaheb, let us go to the sea-shore; the sea would be something to be seen right now." I protested, "For one, I am famished and besides my clothes are beginning to get wet. So let me go straight home." However, by way of compromise I agreed to let the taxi driver take us via Marine Drive. We came to Marine Drive and Khansaheb asked the cabbie to stop his vehicle at a spot where there is a cement-concrete projection. The waves of the turbulent sea at this point were thirty to forty feet high. Khansaheb said, "Deodharsaheb, the time and this place are just right for doing riyaz. Listen." And he began to sing. Whenever a particularly massive wave broke and water spouted up Khansaheb's tana rose in synchronization and descended when water cascaded down. Water rose in a single massive column but split at the top and fell in broken slivers; so did Khansaheb's tana in raga Miyan Malhar. Sometimes, if his ascending notes failed to keep pace with the surging water, he was angry with himself but tried again till it synchronized perfectly with the surging water. This went on for three quarters of an hour. I got so interested in the whole proceeding that hunger and thirst were forgotten. Finally Khansaheb's son, who happened to be with us, said to his father, "Let us go now - it is two-thirty p.m. and we are both hungry."...
मा ( Ma , mother )
यह दोनो कविताएँ मुझे प्रिय हैँ ! मा की ममतामयी लहर जब कविता के रूप मे बहती है तब आधुनिक काल हो या प्राचीन, हिन्दी भाषा की अमृत ~ गँगा यूँ ही प्रवाहित होती हुई , जन साधारण के हृदय को भावना के आवेग मे बहा ले जाती है.
सूरदास जी " कान्हा " की अद्भूत लीला का बखान कर रहे है ---
क़ान्हा , य़शोदा मैया से शिकायात करर्ते है अपने बडे भैया कि शरारत की !
" मैया मोही दाऊ बहुत खिजायॉ
ग़ोरे नन्द जसोगदा गोरी ,
तुम कत श्याम शरीर
चुटकी दै दै हसत बाल सब
सीख देत बलबीर !"
द्रिश्य नयनो के सामने उजागर है. शरारती बालाक की मनोहारी छवि, ममता से लिपटी बोली, मधुर मधुर नुपूर की छनकती किँकिणी समान प्रतीत होती है. मोहन के मुख को गुस्स से लाल हुआ देख, मा प्रेम - वश रीझती है -- कहती है ,
" सुनहु कान्ह, बलभद्र , जनमत हो को धूर्त ! सुर स्याम मोहे गो - धन की सौँ, हौँ माता तू पूत! "
मा ने कह दिया कि मै मा और तुम मेरे बेटे हो ! अपने बदमाश बडे भाई कि बात ना सुनो -- एक मा ही ये ममता समझ सकती है.
मुझे यह छवि ने सबसे ज्यादा प्रभावित किया है.
प्राचीन हिन्दी भाषा यही से चलकर आज २१ वी सदी तक आ गई है. परन्तु मा के प्रति प्रेम - वात्स्ल्य आज भी कुछ ऐसी ही रीत से कविता या दोहो मे कहा गया
सरदार कल्याण सिन्घ के दोहे भी मर्म कि बात कह रहे है ---
" बच्चे से पुछो जरा , सबसे अचछा कौन ? उँगली उठे उधर जिधर मा बैठी हो मौन !"
और उस से भी बडी बात इस राज कि बात बताते हुए लिखते ये कहना कि ---
" करना मा को खुश अगर , कहते लोग तमाम , रोशनआ अपने काम से, करो पिता क नाम !"
कितनी बडी सीख दे दी है यहाँ कल्याण जी ने
भारत की हर मा यही चाहती आयी है कि पाल पोस कर बालक को इस लायक बना दे कि वो बुलन्दीयो को छु ले !
- ऐसे काम करे कि जिससे मा के सुहाग कि लाली सूरज कि रोशनी सी जगमागने लगे
- सपूत हो तब मा छाया बनी रहती है , दीपक कि बाती बन कर जलती खपती रहती है , अपनी गृहस्थी मे व्यस्त रहती है, किसी अपेक्षा के बिना प्रयास करती है कि वो आगामी पीढी को सक्षम बनाये
-- आज हम जो यहा तक आये है उस के पीछे ऐसी , भारत की कितनी माता ओ का परिश्रम नीव मे पडे फौलाद और इस्पात कि सद्रश्य है. इसलिये मुझे नयी प्रणाली , नयी पीढी के लिये लिखे गये ये दोहे बहुत प्रभावित कर गये !
है दोहे छोटे छोटे मगर बात समझो तो बडी बात कहते है - आशा है कि आप सभी को इन से प्रेरणा व सम्बल मिलेगा जैसा मुझ को प्राप्त हुआ है.
भविष्य से आशा और भारतीया वान्ग्मय से ममता का अमर - सन्देशा !
सूरदास जी व सरदार कल्याण सिन्घजी दोनो ही हमारे लिये सेतु रच गये है ....
. रास्ता आगे हमे चलते चलते पार करना है !
ईति शुभम !
Love Travels ......... (.Panther & a Parrot )
  • Love Travels......................................................................
    When my eyes turn to birds,
    And fly across the seas
    I come to you my Beloved,
    To sit on your Mango tree!
    I sit there my love and
    Clean my feathers green,
    The water beads drop down
    Unto the dust below...
    I open my red beak and sing
    And shout aloud your name,
    You look at me and smile...
    That springy look on your face
    You yawn and spread...
    Your wide arms, above your head!
    That sight of yours, like
    A stretching panther, in glee...
    I will remember, always!
Teri Khushbu Me Base Khat
-Jagjit Singh
Jin ko duniyaa ki nigaahon se chhupaaye rakkhaa ...
Jin ko ik umr kaleje se lagaaye rakhaa ........
Dee jin ko, jinhe, iman ko, jinhen imaan banaaye rakhaa .......
Tune duniyaa ki nigaahon se jo bachkar likhe ............................
.
Saalahaa-saal mere naam baraabar likhe ......
Kabhi din men to kabhi raat men uthakar likhe ..........
Teri khushboo me base khat main jalaataa kaise ?
Pyaar men doobe huye Khat main jalaataa kaise ?
Tere Khat, aaj main , Gangaa men bahaa aayaa hoon.....
Aag bahate hue paani men lagaa aayaa hoon........
What is Sanjha Chulha?
What is Sanjha Chulha?
Saanjha Chula ek Door Darshan per TV series aaya kartee thee .........
I am sure quite a few may know the meaning of Sanjha Chulha, because it's a very common punjabi term and also there used to be a tele-serial with the same name on DD. It's one of the most beautiful traditions of Punjab. It was started by Guru Nanak Dev jee in Pakistan part of Punjab. It was the tradition of langar or community kitchen. It was that langar tradition that led to Sanjha Chulha (Common Oven).
In those days (and in some small villages even today) generally men would go to farms while women will do chores at home (although a lot of women in Punjab used to do farming too). In the evening, all the women would make some kind of daal/sabzi at their home but not everyone could afford a chulha (earthen oven or kinda tandoor). So, all the women will take atta (wheat flour) from their home and cook all the rotis together. While cooking rotis they will also discuss everything under the moon. This made it an ideal community place to exchange gossips and stories from all around the village. After making rotis they all will take their share and goto their respective homes, away from the gossips and closer to reality.
Sach kaha , Europe / WEST mei humare Bharat jaise Ped, ful Phool nahi hote ! Rasmo rivaz bhee ees tarah ke nahee hote , shayad isiliye hum baar baar , apne ateet ki taraf laut jate hain.
When I look back to my childhood scenes --- I remember the Garden at the back side of my parents' home --- there were 2 GUAVA trees , may b they r still laden with un ripe amrood or Peru fruits ? .... then there were 4 coconut trees which always had enough fresh coconut water to be offered to any Guest that came by. There was an IMLI ka tree ...with White Vilayatee Imli which was sweet & pink colored hanging in C shape from green branches ...
There were 12 or 15 shrubs of BUTT MOGRA - KING JASMINE which has dense white Flowers , with multiple petals .....
In the middle og our Garden , was plain Red Clay Earth. on this small piece of Land.
When I was 11 or 12 yrs old, us Girls would put 3 bricks in a U shape , put some dry wood & start a fire & borrow some rice & daal & haldi & salt & a big Brass pot & cook Khichdee over that fire !!
How happy we were when after half an hour or more it got cooked & we ate it as it gave off a sweet smell in that smoke filled air of early afternoon ............
Meena & Jairaj Uncle's daughter Geetu my playing companions & my younger Sister , Mongi & elder sister Vasavi was there & my youngest sibling, Paritosh hovered , near by.
Paritosh still lives there & must glance at that piece of land often while I see it only in my dreams ...
I remembered this because i happened to read this write up ..........today & am nostalgic ................. http://vidhur.rediffblogs.com/2005_20_02_vidhur_archive.html -- lavanya
वही मिट्टी के घर आँगन,
वही पिता की पुण्य ~ छवि,
सजल नयन पढ्ते रामायण !
Robert Arnett / " INDIA UNVEILED "
[ I'm meeting Robert Arnett tomorrow ]...............
BOB = Mr Arnett turned out to be a GEM ! He loves india. As our SAges have sung, we change our CHOLA [ our exterior appearance ] from birth to birth
I think when our Chola turns " Basanti " , we r truly
" Indian " in spirit !! As Bhagat singh sang, " Mera Rang de Basanti Chola , Mai rang de " ~~~
Bob arnett said, when i reached India, I felt a sense of great relief, as if I'd come Home ! He told me many many stories , I'll speak about them when we talk next . He chided me too & said, " do not rest on the laurels of your GREAT Father !! It is TIME for you to Get up & Move & take your Journey ahead & GIVE what you have ! "
I gave him a small [ the size of a dime ] Silver pendant of Sree Ram Krishna Param Hans [ as HE is my GURU ] ~~ So he said , "As I drove from Georgia, I stopped near the Ocean [ don't know where ] & As I looked on at its BLUENESS -
I thought of Sree Ram Krishna [ As Both Ram & Krishna r considered to be "Dark or BLUE in complexion as per Hindu belief ] ~~ & Now you bring his Image to me ! " Then I lovingly put it on his neck as he sat in front of me like a Child ! His Gentleness was disarming ! His knowledge - vast ! He follows Kriya -Yoga as taught by Param Hansa YOGANANDA [ autobiography of a Yogi ] ~~ I feel I was to have met him at this juncture of my life. & So the Universe made it happen.
His Book for Chldren ~` " Finders Keepers " has many illustrations .
India Unveiled was exhibited at Houston 2/3 yrs ago & Meena [ mehta ] had told me about the amazing pic. journey captured through the camera lense by the author n i had wistfully wanted to see them / read the book n perhaps , meet the author !! & All of It has Happened !!
He read my 2 Eng. poems & saw B/W pic.s of myself, amma, papaji & my children when they were young , he would comment on some as I Like this one Or Here you are " Happy " !
I touched his feet & he touched mine so i told him " As All Females have the Divine Female Energy, I Bless you ! " He was amused but told Deepak, that ' she never changes her mind, does she ,once she has made it up ?' LOL .....LOL ...
I don't know if he was or is married or not ~~~ he was alone here @ Cinti. He loves Masala Chai So I filled my old plastic Honey bottle in the shape of Teddy Bear & told him, 'now the mother in me treats like you a child ' ~~ I made Poodis & Chole & sukhe alu ki sabji for all of us to eat & he said, 'each piece of Potato is cut with so much love & attention ! ' We sat on the floor side by side & ate at Shubdaji's home where he usually stays on his visits.
I'm sure we will meet again. It was a fulfilling experience indeed
SHAKUNTALAM
“ KALIDASA “ is perhaps the most famous poet author from ancient India . His prolific writings are comparable to William Shakerspear’s in its dimension & beauty in his Plays
His most famous Dramas are – SHAKUNTALAM which describes the early life of SHUNGA dynasty. It is a romantic tale of a beautiful maiden left in the forest by a celestial nymph come down from Heaven and who has a romantic yet brief encounter with a sage [ His name was Vishwamitra ] and this lovely daughter is the out come of this Union .
Both the parents leave the baby who is fed life giving water gathered from plants by a Swan & just then another Sage , a hermit named Kanva passes by and in his compassion picks up this lovely child and after that moment she is raised in that forest by a sage named Kanva and he named this girl – child SHAKUNTALA meaning “ the one fed by a swan “ ~~
Shakuntala grows upto be a breath taking beauty just like her Celestial mother [ MANEKA ] who was an Apsara = the lovely dancing & singing , ever youthful maidens residing in Heaven .
King Udyana sees this innocent forest – girl & is smitten. He approaches her & wins her heart . Gives her his Royal seal , his Ring & leaves her in the absence of her foster father
Another Sage comes visiting this Ashram = A Hermitage or Forest sanctuary.
Shakuntala ignores him as she is lost in the thoughts of her beloved & this sage Durvasa [ famous for his anger ] curses her that, ~~ “ the One in whose thoughts she is lost , will soon forget her ! “
Shakuntala and her friends implore the sage Durvasa to b kind and take back this curse. He relents and adds that “ when this person will see some personel object belonging to him , he will remember her ! “
Shakuntala & her friends are reassured , thinking that the RING given by King Udayan will keep Shakuntalas’ memory alive is his heart.
Sage Kanva on his return finds that Shakuntala is pregnant and learns of King Udyan’s visit & their marriage vows that took place in his Forest – Ashram. So he decides to send Shakuntala to the King at his far away palace.
As Shakuntala crosses the River Ganga she dips her hand in its water to pray & her Ring slides from her finger & a Fish swallows the ring ! The Curse comes true when King Udyana fails to recognize his wife , his love when she reaches & faces him at his palace.
Heart broken, Shakuntala fled away from there. She gives birth to a handsome and brave prince , all alone in a forest , surrounded by Lions !
After 6 years pass , King Udayana is out on a hunt and is amazed to see a brave and handsome child playing with Lion cubs !! The Boy is opening their mouth and counting their Teeth !! This strange sight fills his heart with wonder and amazement and he asks this boy who is he ?
The young Prince replies , “ I am BHARAT ! Son of Shakuntala and King Udayana !
Udayana is intrigued and begs the young Bharat to take him to his mother , Shakuntala
He remembers her now. Because a fisher man had caught this big fish & upon cutting the fish’s belly had found this magnificent Royal Ring and had taken it to the Royal court in the hopes of getting a prize for this offering which surely belonged to his King ! As soon as King glanced at his Ring, he remembered his forest encounter with the lovely maiden Shakuntala and his love ~ Marriage that had taken place in the hermitage of Sage Kanva
He also remembers the sad encounter when he refused to recognize her when she visited him at his Palace and told him she was bearing his child and King Udayan repented his folly for rejecting her and he vows to seek his beloved .
Today his search is over and he stands face to face with the lovely Shakuntala ! They embrace lovingly and he takes his Son Bharat and his beloved wife Shakuntala back with him to his kingdom. They live happily ever after and INDIA is called BHARAT after this Royal Prince as he ascends the throne after his Father’s Rule ends. In ancient times INDIA was called BHARAT and many love to call India Bharat even today, in the memory of this Brave Prince who was the symbol of Union of True love.
जिस दिन से चला था मैँ,
वृन्दावन की सघन घनी कुँज ~ गलियोँ से ,
राधे, सुनो, तुम मेरी मुरलिया फिर , ना बजी !
किसी ने तान वँशी की फिर ना सुनी !
वँशी की तान सुरीली,तुम सी ही सुकुमार
सुमधुर, कली सी ,मेरे अँतर मे,घुली - मिली सी,
निज प्राणोँ के कम्पन सी अधर रस से पली पली सी !
तुम ने रथ रोका -- अहा ! राधिके !
धूल भरी ब्रज की सीमा पर ,
अश्रु रहित नयनोँ मे थी पीडा कितनी सदियोँ की !
सागर के मन्थन से निपजी , भाव माधुरी
सोँप दिये सारे बीते क्षण वह मधु - चँद्र - रजनी,
यमुना जल कण , सजनी !
भाव सुकोमल सारे अपने भूत भव के सारे वे सपने
नीर छ्लकते हलके हलके
सावन की बूँदोँ का प्यासा अँतर मन चातक पछतता
स्वाति बूँद तुम अँबर पर गिरी सीप मेँ, मोती बन!
मुक्ता बन मुस्कातीँ अविरल
सागर मँथन सा मथता मन
बरसता जल जैसे अम्बर से
मिल जाता द्रिग अँचल पर !
सौँप चला उपहार प्रणय का
मेरी मुरलिया, मेरा मन!
तुम पथ पर निस्पँन्द खडी,
तुम्हे देखता रहा मौन शशी
मेरी आराध्या, प्राणप्रिये,
मन मोहन मैँ, तुम मेरी सखी !
आज चला वृदावन से ---
नही सजेगी मुरली कर पे --
अब सुदर्शन चक्र होगा हाथोँ पे
मोर पँख की भेँट तुम्हारी,
सदा रहेगी मेरे मस्तक पे!
आकाश तक फैल गई लाली, हुई सिँदुरी साँझ,
नैतिकता नष्ट हुई, मानवता भ्रष्ट हुई,
निर्ल्लज्ज भाव से , बहती हो क्यूँ ??
इतिहास की पुकार, करे हूँकार, ओ ग़ँगा की धार,
निर्बल जन को, सबल सँग्रामी, गमग्रोग्रामी,बनाती नहूँ हो क्यूँ ?
इतिहास की पुकार, करे हूँकार,
ओ अनपढ जन, अक्षरहीन, अनगिन जन,
अज्ञ विहिननेत्र विहिन दिक` मौन हो कयूँ ?
व्यक्ति रहे , व्यक्ति केन्द्रित, सकल समाज,
व्यक्तित्व रहित,निष्प्राण समाज को तोडती न क्यूँ ?
ओ ग़ँगा की धार, निर्बल जन को, सबल सँग्रामी,
गमग्रोग्रामी,बनाती नहूँ हो क्यूँ ?
विस्तार है अपार ..प्रजा दोनो पार..करे हाहाकार ...
निशब्द सदा ,ऑ गँगा तुम, बहती हो क्यूँ ??
अनपढ जन, अक्षरहीन, अनगिनजन,
अज्ञ विहिननेत्र विहिन दिक` मौन हो कयूँ ?
Bistirno Paarore (and/or Ganga) [Non-film]
Composer: Bhupen Hazarika
Inspired by the song 'Old man river', which was part of a 1927 musical 'Showboat'.
The musical was based on Edna Ferber's book with the same name that was released in 1926. The composers of the original version of Showboat (there have been many versions subsequently!) were Oscar Hammerstein II and Jerome Kern.
The original 'Old man river' has been sung by people like Bing Crosby, Paul Robeson, Al Johnson and Jules Bledsoe. However, without robbing any credit from our own Bhupen Hazarika, I personally felt 'Bistirno paarore' is the Indian interpretation of the older classic and is Indianized to a large extent. Particularly, listen to the original from the point 00:54:00 onwards - there are clear indications of how the Indian version was conceived! Also, note that the subsequent version Ganga was based on the river while the original showboat version was about the river Mississippi!
Was Bistirno...based on some river too? Bramhaputra? Just a guess - its possible! Also strikingly similar is the kind of quivery voice on both the Indian and western version!!
I'm sure the subsequent western versions were licensed and authorized. But was the Indianized version authorized by the original's license owners?
That's what holds the key between a plagiarized work and an inspired one!
Naina Deewaane & Suraiyaji
Naina Deewaane & Suraiyaji
Song : Naina Deewane, ik nahin maane
Film : Afsar ( Read the
Soundtrack Review of Afsar )
Lyrics: Pandit Narendra Sharma
Pandit Narendra Sharma, was one of those few poets who traced his roots to world of Hindi literature. He, along with Bharat Vyas and Kavi Pradeep brought a flavour of pure Hindi into film lyrics. Hindi film lyrics traditionally have had a strong influence of classical and progressive Urdu poetry (thanks to stalwarts like Sahir Ludhianvi, Kaifi Azmi, Majrooh Sultanputi, Shakeel Badayuni and not to forget Chacha Ghalib!) on one side and folk based dialects of Hindi like Avadhi, Braj Bhasha, Bhojpuri etc. on the other. It is not very common to see pure literary Hindi make an appearance in this arena. It was Pandit Sharma and Bharat Vyas who were responsible in a big way for introducing this shade to the rich tapestry of film lyrics .
Afsar was a rare collaboration between the greats... SD Burman and Pandit Narendra Sharma and ofcourse...Suraiya. The result is sheer magic. Panditji brings a rare literary sensitivity to the songs of Afsar. In this song Naina Deewane, the poet comes up with very pretty lyrics that ooze with the Shringar Ras.
The most striking and pleasant part for me is Panditji's play with alliteration. In the mukhda he plays around with the m and n sounds with the ease of a veteran. To sample
Nain Deewaane, ik nahin maane , kare man maani maane na
hue yeh paraye man haar aaye, man ka marham jaane na, maane na maane na .....
When it comes to the stanzas he again does some charming play with a hint homonysms in
Jaana na jaana man hi na jaana
Or the very pretty play with rhymes (and alliteration)
Jeevan beli kare atakheli, mehke man ke bakul
priti phool phoole jhoola jhoole, chekhe ban bulbul
Year of Release : 1950
