SATI SYSTEM -- & birth of Aparna


How
did this custom start and till when did this go on ??

To become a " Sati = means to IMMOLATE ones' self while being alive " & to be LOYAL to ones husband ...........not only in this birth but in cosecutive births & be united forever & ever .
It is a to VOW to B UNITED with this same Man in many next Births
It is thus a HINDU religious tradition beased on the concept of a soul's taking " Re - Birth "

So ...............this was the Origin of the first " SATI " which till today is meant for a Lady who is CHASTE & is of DEVOUT character for her Chosen man ..

now the story ..........Once Devi SATI watched the Devas , flying in their beautiful flying machines , wearing fine silk garments & much puzzled, she inquired where were they all going in such hurry ?

The answer shocked her -- They told her that her Father DAKSHA Prajapati was holding a YAGNA = a Holy Fire Sacrifice & they all were his " Invited Guests " --

Hearing this Sati was sad that she & her husband Shiva the Greatest among YOGIS & an ascetic had been not been invited --

Sati asked Shiva ,
" Lord ! My father has invited many Guests -- may I go & attend the Fire Sacrifice ? "

Shiva : " My dearest wife ! If one is not invited , one should NEVER attend that function -- may it be of one's nearest family member , relative or a Friend -- but you are Wise my Lady & Free to do as you wish ! "

Now Sati wanted to meet her siblings & her Mother & decided to go -
&indoing so ... she did not listen to the Wisest among ALL - her husband - SHIVA !! ;-)

Women !! As they say ...have a Mind of their own & will not listen to any advise :)

When she reached her Parents' HOME, no one Greeted nor showed any love for her -- neither her Father = DAKSHA , nor her Siblings -- :-(


Only her Mother hugged her -- but that was not enough for SATI !! She became up set & her anger rose up in her heart !

" How cold every one is towards me ! She thought -- my father will not even look at my face even though I come to visit him from Kailash , far into the Himalayan Mountains where my beloved husband, Shiva , sits immersed , peacefully in meditation ! Shiva is the Yogic force which keeps this entire Universe STABLE ! How can my own , disrespect me & my husnand ?"


As the Fire Sacrifice rituals began, Sati noticed that All the GODS were given their SHARE & a Place of HONOR except her husband SHIVA !!

This made her furious !! As if the disrespect for her wasn't enough ...now no place in the Yagna ?
This really aggrevated Sati further ....

In smoldering anger , SATI, made a YOGIC Flame of FIRE leap out of her right foot's toe .....& suddenly a huge FIRE engulfed the Altar & the Tent & started to spread all around & the Fire Sacrifice was destroyed before it could begin !!

Shiva realised this in his Yogic meditation & was very sad to know , what was to have happened , had happened in this TRAGIC fire --

Alas !!! Shiva could see clearly from far away Kailash that SATI , his beloved & Chaste wife 's
Body was burning ......now it was turn of the Lord of the UNIVERSE = Shiva to get up set & angry !!

Shiva reacted immeadiately ....& sent his GANA ( his servant ) the ferocious BHAIRAV who destroyed the Function entirely.

Then Shiva appeared there himself & carried the BURNING - half Burnt body of Sati in his hands & stated to Dance his TAANDAV = the Dance of Destruction for the entire Cosmos !!

Vishnu intervened & cut off Sati's Body into 51 parts with his CHAKRA = Discus as Shiva kept dancing ....the parts wherever they fell all over India have become Devi's " SHAKTI PEETH " or ...the Power points ...

Minaxi has her Eyes, [ the Minaxi temple ] Kaamkahya in Assam has her Yoni , which is the Most POTENT + powerful place for Tantrik rituals & the water there turns RED once a year as if manstruating !! Many have warned not to go to Kamkhya without a Guru ...lots of Magic practises go on there ...(You can read about Shakti peeth etc on Net)

But after Shivas; rage subsided ,he went into Deep meditation & Sati was Born eventually as the daughter of Mountain HIMALAYA & his wife named Queen MENA thus in her second "incarnation " SATI was Re - born as PARVATI = which means Daugter /or / Putri of Mount Himalaya & Mena Maharani ( Queen is a Maharani & a King is aaharaja )
...Parvati as she gre up to be a beautiful young damsel did severe Pennance = Tapasya to Get Shiva as her husband .... Once again she wished to be Re -united with her Beloved husband SHIVA !

In her pennance she gave up solid food & slowly & steadily, she ate only a handful of Forest leaves & stood up right on one leg lost in the Name chanting of Shiva ---

She recited the MANTRA : " Om Namah Shivay " -- over & over again with each breath that she inhaled & exhaled , until her Mind, body & spirit all 3 immersed into SHIVA & his Being !!

Then one day , it so happened that she slowly ate just a single Leaf & when she gave up even that Leaf as food she was called Aparna " the one who did not even eat a single leaf "

...Her Mother " Queen - Mena " shreiked , " OOMA " at such austerities taken up by her tender & delicate daughter PARVATI & implored her not to do such severe pennance .....but she told her darling daughter ,from today I name you " UMA / Ooma " so that this world will remember your severe pennance to obtain Shiva as your husband ! "

...& Devi's second name became thus " UMA" ..

..All Girls when they Pray to Uma, Parvati, Sati, Aparna Durga, Amba , Maheshwari, Tripur Sundri , Girija, Bhawani, Durga, Trailokya Sundri, Maha Kali, Shivani ,
Shail puti, Chandra Ghanta, Mrudanee etc etc etc
[ all these Devi Bhagwati's her names ] ..it is said by the wise that ...." whoever PRAYS & invokes the names of Sati, Uma ,Parvati will get get a husband as Loving & Great & Noble as SHIVA !!

Just like Shiva -- who has always been the silent sufferer & the One Lord of this Universe who always takes care of every one ............................ .

was Sati system a common or a rare incident ??

It became more common in the " RAJPUT KING's Reign ".
.as a Safety against the invading Muslims .

During the reign of the Brave Rajput Kings, their Queens burnt themselves alive rather then fall prey to approaching Enemies which in midieval India happened to be the Moslem Kings who were establishing their supremecy in India & had captured the throne of Delhi !

They wanted to subjugate the North Western provinces of Rajputana.

...........Then after the Reforms initiated by the Arya Samajists & Reformists like Raja ram Mohan Roy, Sati system was ablsolved by the British Empire who had come into India as Traders .

They established East India Company but within 2 centuries they became Rules of India's destiny & called their British Indian Colonies -- " The Jewel in the Crown " but they were aware of many odd practises found among those they ruled -- such as SATI SYSTEM or the Burning of a Bride which they called " Barbaric Hindu custom " ...................
& made LAWS to change this practise & stop it from happening.

There has been a headline grabbing news in an Independant India of a SATI ---- which was committed by a Rajput Bride at her husband's death -- they both were in prime of their Youth -- Her name is " Roop Kanwar " !

papaji's dost wrote a famous Book titled,

do U know who wrote a famous bhajan by this same line ??

Answer : Surdas ji ...it was his bhajan , written when he grew old ...& ...after this one Sree Krishna gave him Darshan in the SWAROOP of a Small Boy :)
have U heard that story ?
Surdasji was Blind poet + Singer
So we call any person with similer talents " ye to Surdas hai ! "
( meaning he can sing though he is blind )

---Surdasji lived at Brindavan & composed new songs each day as he sat in front of Krishna & tried his best to please the Lord so that his Bhakti would be ful filled & Sree Krishnaji , would some day give him Darshan & bless him so that his soul will not be born again n again in this world to feel pain n difficulties .

Many years passed but all his Songs did not bring Krishna in front of Surdasji's Eyes ! He would some days even Dance to please Sree Krishna.Surdas ji's songs = bhajan written for Baby Krishna are particulerly so remarkable that it feels as if Maiyya Yashoda herself is singing --- I have 2 of these ----

-- sung by Sadhna Sargam from Mahabharat-- its a Lullaby = a Haalardu :)
& a Nitin Mukesh song, " Maiyya moree , main nahee Maakhan khayo , Daoo [ myBig brother Bal Ram ] bahut khijayo "

[ Krishna after eating Makkhan lies to Maa Yashoda that Mother, I did not eat Butter -- My Elder brother Bal Ram teases me that our Father = Nand Ji is Gora, so is Maa Yashoda & I amGora but you alone r dark ! --- I think they bought you from some one in abazaar & you are not their child !! "
[ Irony is that, though this was TRUE-- as Krishna was DEVKI & VASUDEV's son -- Krishna complains to MaaYashoda & she hugs & kisses his tears away & tells him, I Swear on our entire flock of Cows == which is called GODHAN --- that for as long as the SUN shines , you are my child & I am your Mother !!

"SUCH SUBLIME ..bhaav = feelings come only from a Saint poets heart -- here this Saint poet is SURDASJI my Papaji is also a similer Saint - poet. not boasting but he writes as if He can See Sree Krishna ---

Or like Sree Ram as Baba Tussidasji has written his Bhajans.


SO --- as Surdasji reached a ripe old age, he sobbed one day & sang,

" Abmain, nachyo bahut GOPAL !"

How much do you want me to dance on O lord ? When will you appear before me? & Bless me ?? "

Then he got up & walked towards his Kutiya ( HUT ) in darkness , gropping his way as he was blind & other people had gone home from the temple.

Surdasji did not realise that he was walking straight into an open well as he was really sad & disturbed that night.

Sree Krishna saw this accident about to happen & rushed as a young Boy of 11 & stopped Surdasji saying, "Baba ! Kahan ja rahe ho ? Samne Kunva hai -- Ruko, main aapkee laathi pakad ker aapko kutiya tak chod aata hoon ! "

The Voice was sweet as Amrit & divine & in a flash Surdasji knew this young lad was his Lord " Gopal "

--So Surdasji started pulling on the Laathi = stick & grabbed his hands !!

Sree Krishna tried to free his hands but Surdasji held on tight --- but then let it go ...

Surdasji fell on theground & sang crying, " haath chuda ker jaat ho, tub maanu tumko Shyam, jo dil se mere ja sako tum ..."

& Sree Krishna it is said, " Blessed him by giving him SIGHT & gave DARSHAN in his " CHAR - BHUJA MAHA VISHNU SWAROOP " ----
& after seeing Sree Hari's " Char ~ Bhuja Swaroop "
Surdas got Mukti ---

Mera bachpan, Machuaron ki ghanee bastee ke bahut najdik beeta hai. Us basti ka naam tha " Danda " ;-)

Koliwada Koli logon ki bastee thee jo Bambai ki pramukh [Adivasee ] - Jan - Jaati hai.

Ek Kolee Kanya jiska naam tha Kashi won humare ghar per rehtee thee aur Krishna Janmastmi ke avsar per, GOVINDA dekhne hum uske sath un logon ki bastee mein jaya karte the.

Bahut maja aata tha dekh ker .... Maujon ka oochalna, lakdi ki badi chotee naaven , machure , Machlee bechtee streeyaan aur jaal samete Koli purush.

1 ) "Behzad" sahib muhabbat ki pehchaan is andaaz mein karaatehaiN :-
"ashkoN ko mere lekar daaman par jaraa jaaNcho,
jam jaaye to ye khooN hai, beh jaye to paani hai !"

2 ) muhabbat aur majboori ka daaman aur choli ka saath hai. isi baare mein:-
"majboori-e-muhabbat Allah tujh se samjhe,
unke sitam bhi seh kar deni padi duayen."

3 ) aage wo kahte haiN ki ishq ka khyaal ibaadat mein bhi peeccha nahiN chhodta:-
"ab is ko kufr kahoon ya kahoon kamale ishq,
namaaz mein bhi tumhaara khyaal hota hai."

4) muhabbat ki hadd kahan tak hai, dekhiye:-
"jaan lene ke liye thodi si khaatir kar di,
raat moonh choom liya shamaa ne parwaane ka."

5) Galib ka ye sher to aapke zehan se na jaane kitni baar guzra hoga:-
"ishq par jor nahiN, hai ye aatish Galib;
ke lagaaye na lage aur bujhaye na bujhe."

6 ) Arsh Malsyani ka yeh sher shayad pasand aaye:-
"tawazun khoob ye ishq-o-sazaye-ishq mein dekha,
tabiyat ek baar aayi museebat baar baar aayi."

7) lekin aakhir ye `muhabbat' hai kya balaa?
Iqbal sahib ka ye sher qabil-e-taareef hai:-
"muhabbat kya hai?
taaseer-e-muhabbat kis ko kahate hain?
tera majboor kar dena, mera majboor ho jaana."

8) aur `Adam' sahib bhi dhoond rahe haiN:-
"wo aate hain to dil mein kuchh kasak maaloom hoti hai,
men darta hoon kahin isko muhabbat to nahin kahte !"

unko tasallibakhsh jawaab nahin mila:-

9) "ay dost mere seene ki dhadkan ko dekhna,
wo cheez to nahin hai muhabbat kahen jise."

10 ) kahte hain ki ishq andha hota hai lekin? :-
"ishq naazuk hai behad, aql ka bojh utha nahiN sakta."

11 ) ek zamaana tha ke ishq ke maaroN ki zubaan par `Daag'sahib ka ye sher besaakhta nikal jaata tha:-
"dil ke aayine mein hai tasveere yaar,
jab zara gardan jhukayidekh li tasveere yaar ! "

12 ) mere nojawaan doston, ye yaad rakhna:-
"muhabbat shauq se keeje magar ek baat kahti hoon,
har ek khush-rang patthar gauhar-o-neelam nahin hota."

13 ) aur ye bhi yaad rakhna jaise ke Iqbal sahib ne taaqeed ki hai:
"khaamosh ay dil! bhari mehfil mein chillaana nahin achha,
adab pehla qareena hai muhabbat ke qareenon mein"

14 ) aakhir meiN Faiz sahib ke is sher ke saath baat khatm karti hoon jismen maano saari kaynaat ek taraf aur muhabbat ?

DAY Commentators from all over the world are covering the ceremony. We concentrate on one, let us say the most distinguished American broadcaster of the time, Edward R. Murrow, who sits on the makeshift platform, a microphone marked "CBS" before him, describing the procession as technicians and staff move quietly around him. MURROW (clipped, weighted) ...The object of this massive tribute died as he had always lived -- a private man without wealth, without property, without official title or office... KINGSWAY - NEW DELHI - EXTERIOR - DAY As the cortege continues on its way, we get shots of the marching soldiers, of the faces of Sikhs, and Tamils, Anglo- Indians, Moslems from the north, Marathas from the south, blue-eyed Parsees, dark-skinned Keralans... MURROW'S VOICE-OVER Mahatma Gandhi was not a commander of great armies nor ruler of vast lands, he could boast no scientific achievements, no artistic gift... Yet men, governments and dignitaries from all over the world have joined hands today to pay homage to this little brown man in the loincloth who led his country to freedom... We see the throng, following the weapon-carrier bier of Gandhi as it slowly inches its way along the Kingsway. Mountbatten, tall, handsome, bemedalled, walks at the head of dignitaries from many lands... and behind them a broad mass of Indians. For a moment we see their sandalled feet moving along the roadway and realize their quiet, rhythmic shuffling is the only noise this vast assemblage has produced. MURROW'S VOICE-OVER Pope Pius, the Archbishop of Canterbury, President Truman, Chiang Kai-shek, The Foreign Minister of Russia, the President of France... are among the millions here and abroad who have lamented his passing. In the words of General George C. Marshall, the American Secretary of State, "Mahatma Gandhi had become the spokesman for the conscience of mankind..." In the crowd following the bier we pick out the tall, English figure of Mirabehn, dressed in a sari, her face taut in a grief that seems ready to break like the Ganges in flood. Near her a tall, heavy-set man, Germanic, still powerful of build and mien though his white hair and deep lines suggest a man well into his sixties (Kallenbach). He too marches with a kind of numb air of loss that is too personal for national mourning. On the edge of the street an American newspaperman (Walker) watches as the bier passes him. He has been making notes, but his hand stops now and we see the profile of Gandhi from his point of view as the weapon-carrier silently rolls by. It is personal, close. Walker clenches his teeth and there is moisture in his eyes as he looks down. He tries to bring his attention to his pad again, but his heart is not in it and he stares with hollow emptiness at the street and the horde of passing feet following the bier. MURROW'S VOICE-OVER ...a man who made humility and simple truth more powerful than empires." And Albert Einstein added, "Generations to come will scarce believe that such a one as this ever in flesh and blood walked upon this earth." The camera picks out those who ride on the weapon-carrier with Gandhi's body... the stout, blunt, but now shattered Patel, Gandhi's son, Devadas, the strong, almost fierce face of Maulana Azad, now angry at the Gods themselves... and finally Pandit Nehru -- a face with the strength of a hero, the sensitivity of a poet, and now wounded like the son of a loving father
MURROW'S VOICE-OVER
... but perhaps to this man of peace,
to this fighter who fought without
malice or falsehood or hate,
the tribute he would value most has come
from General Douglas McArthur:
"If civilization is to survive," the General said this morning, "all men cannot fail to adopt Gandhi's belief that the use of force to resolve conflict is not only wrong but contains within itself the germ of our own self-destruction."... A news truck is parked in the mass of the crowd. As the cortege nears, the photographers on it stand to snap their pictures. There is a newsreel crew center. The camera features a woman photographer (Margaret Bourke-White) who sits with her legs dangling over the side of the truck, her famous camera held loosely in her hand, un-regarded, as she watches the body of Gandhi approach. The intelligent features are betrayed by the emotion in her eyes. For an instant we see Gandhi from her point of view, and read the personal impact it has on her. MURROW'S VOICE-OVER
Perhaps for the rest of us,
the most satisfying comment on this tragedy
comes from the impudent New York PM which today wrote,
"There is still hope for a world which reacts as
reverently as ours has to the death of a man like Gandhi."...

Swami Vivekananda in a Beam of Musical Light by Prakash G. Burde While researching for an article on Pandit Ramkrishnabua Vaze (1858-1943) one of the foremost Hindustani vocalists belonging to the Gwalior Parampara, I stumbled upon a fascinating piece of historical information about Swami Vivekananda, which was either hither to unknown or simply ignored.


I want to share this with the net surfers, particularly the readers of Kamat's Potpourri, as I consider the musical side of Swami Vivekananda (also known as Narendra Nath Dutt) in his short yet eventful life, very unique.

For Swami Vivekananda, music "is the highest form of art and those who understand it, is the highest form of worship (for them)"

Narendra Nath inherited love of music from his parents. While his father Vishwanath Dutt taught him rudiments of Dhrupad and Dhamar the raga music of ancient India, while his mother Bhuvaneshwari Devi, taught him the music of lighter genre such as "Krishna-Leela" depicting the pranks of Krishna - the toddler.

Swamiji's contemporaries, Swami Abhedanand and Shyamanand mention that Narendra Nath also had intense training from Beni Gupta, Ahmed Khan, and Chhote and Bade Dunni Khan. He also learnt to play the Pakhawaj, an ancient Indian drum held horizontally and played with fingers, while squatting on the floor.

Before he turned twenty, Narendra Nath was an accomplished singer in Dhrupad and a much sought-after Pakhawaj player. He participated in several concerts in Kolkata, then known as Calcutta. It should not surprise many that Vivekananda besides being an excellent orator, was well versed in theatre as well. He acted as Abhedanand in Trilok Nath Sanyal's musical play "Nav-Vrindavan" and donned saffron robes. Perhaps it was ordained by providence as proved later that Sri Ramakrishna Paramahansa, who witnessed this show was to be his mentor and saffron robes and asceticism became a way of life for Narendra Nath Dutt.

There were two localities in Calcutta, which were truly famous as centers of east-west cultures. One was known as Duttapara where Narendra Nath Dutt lived; and a few furlongs away was Tagorepara, where Rabindra Nath Tagore lived. Many of Rabindra Nath's songs like "Gaganer Thale" in Raga Jaijaiwanti, a night melody, were musically set to tune by Narendra Nath, and his rendition of this composition made it sublime and ethereal.

Rabindra Nath Tagore, himself a great composer, was later to become a precursor of the new "Rabindra Sangeet" an amalgam of music of east and west and also of Carnatic music popular in Southern India. All this without naming Rabindra Sangeet as 'fusion music' which is ever so popular today!

This new system of music created by Tagore is recognized by the All India Radio as light music.

Ramkrishnabua Vaze (1858-1943) mentions about his visit to Swami Vivekananda's Bareilly Ashrama on his return trip from Nepal. Vaze was a guest of Swamiji and both of them indulged in vocal music every evening much to the delight of local connoisseurs. "... Swamiji would get up early in the morning, tune his two Tanpuras (Indian drones) and sing a morning melody Ahir Bhairav, specifically a Tansen Dhrupad composition, to wake up the Ashramites.

" The days I spent in the Ashram were simply unforgettable" Vaze remembers (Sangeet Kala Prakash II).

Besides being one of the foremost spiritual teachers, Vivekananda made a profound and everlasting contribution to the revival of Hinduism devoted to the social development of the downtrodden. But at the same time it is regrettable to note that his other great gift, that of musicianship, was totally ignored by his followers.

He wrote a book on Indian music "Sangeet Kalpataru" while he was barely twenty! While the first edition bore his name as the author, the later editions published by the same publisher Baishnav Charan Basak quietly dropped the author's name (Narendra Nath Dutt) perhaps under compulsion and changed the title to "Sachitra Vishwa Sangeet" edited by the publisher himself!
